JAZZ AUDITION

Level 3

To place in a Level 3, dancers must demonstrate: 

  • All of the above plus

  • Battement, extensions and fan kick at maximum height

  • Additional skills such as tilts, illusions, etc

  • Exceptional ability to pick up choreography quickly

  • Exceptional height and positioning of leaps

  • A minimum performance score of 4

Level 2

  • All of the above plus

  • Double pirouettes

  • Battement, extension and fan kick above 90 degree height

  • Correct positioning of turning jumps (i.e calypso, barrel turns etc)

  • Ability to transition between levels smoothly and with control (ex. Floor to stand)

  • Ability to pick up choreography quickly

  • A minimum performance score of 3

To place in a Level 2, dancers must demonstrate:

Level 1

  • Single pirouette (including spotting technique and clean/controlled landing)

  • Feet in proper position (pointed/flexed or placement if 1st- 5th positions)

  • Legs in proper position (straight on leaps and kicks unless in attitude or developpe)

  • Proper forms on developpe leap

  • Correct arm positioning in choreography and skills

  • Battements and extensions at a minimum 90 degrees in all directions

  • Fan kicks at a minimum 90 degrees, while showing control throughout

  • Ability to transition between levels, and execute basic floorwork

  • A consistent level of stamina

  • Ability to demonstrate appropriate movement texture (i.e smooth vs sharp)

  • Ability to pick up choreography

  • A minimum performance score of 2

To place in a Level 1, dancers must demonstrate:

The Jazz audition will begin with a short series of skills and progressions. These are performed across the floor in groups of 2-3. Dancers will then learn a combo and perform it twice, in groups of 4-6.

"As a self proclaimed "ham" I was concerned about not being able to perform after college. Upon graduation, I noticed several alumni from my dance team being tagged in OnStage's Season 11 show photos. Deciding to audition meant that my worries were over! I'm going into my 12th season and have no plans to stop!"
